During the course of the previous year, the new Chief Secretary for Ireland, Lord Frederick Cavendish, and his Permanent Irish Under Secretary, Thomas Burke, were murdered whilst taking a walk in the grounds of Dublin's Phoenix Park. Seventeen men had been arrested in connection with this vicious attack and it was hoped that in the course of the trial,
