The fancy outfit and Italianate setting make me think he may have been channeling Romeo
It seems from some research there are a few partial sets like this out there but I can't believe there were very many made as it would have been quite a laborious process: weighing nearly half a pound each
made with real slate that retains a sense of many many years of school lessons performed across its surface--and I believe this is an especially old one (19th c I think)
