I love that the color and style of the text is completely different on opposite sides of this one

one in 1907 and one in 1912

reminding one of the lay of the land prior to the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo ending the Mexican American War in 1848 (the reddish watercolor line on the card demarcates the pre-1848 border)

between the top and bottom of the handle

A great deal of care was invested in carving then painting it (showing now a mix of brownish red and gold) with beautifully tapering fingers, painted fingernails, and even fine lines carved into the palm of the hand.
