When I first saw him I immediately associated the black painted plaque he is mounted to as looking like a crescent moon

though most certainly it can still be played

All carved from one piece of wood, with a wonderful play of curves, angles, and straight lines, and clad in black and red paint, time softened but still strong, with the monogram E. M. F painted in cursive along the bottom edge of the frame. Clearly made with lots of love for a very loved one, with hearts everywhere.
