Old Carved Figure with Tall Cap and Wonderful Profile spotted dog I am not quite certain

I am not quite certain if the small curves on the interior edge of the handle were intentionally made or not

which strikes me every time I look at it

Box measures 5 7/8" x 5 7/8" x 1 1/8"t

with some paint loss

and as if it might have just been dug out of the ground

Theres quite a primitive elegance to him I think, and a bit of surface splitting that makes it appear even as if hes got a cloak drawn around him which to me makes also makes him feel a bit French! (From one angle, with face in profile, he actually reminds me a bit of Punch from Punch and Judy, and also a bit of Napolean!) Fantastic dry wood
