I imagine there were once two small, short drawers that fit into the niches at top long gone, but one doesn't really miss them. I'm not sure the story with the paint across the front of the two existing drawers, but it is definitely old too I think of the same period as the gray, which is original to it; perhaps the maker was considering a more decorative treatment but decided
