Spanish patriots balancing The upper half shows exhibitsSpanish patriots, 1809. The red and yellow flags of the Spanish are held high while the French tricolour drags on the ground. At Baylen in southern Spain an uprising of Spanish insurgents led by General Castaenos defied French occupation of Spain and Portugal and forced General Dupont, leader of the French force, to surrender in August 1808.
