The lid does not slide on and off but rather just sits flat and flush on top

and some mythic ones

but this is the first I've come across since--in Kansas City

but cutting a dowel or skewer into pieces of the right size would be easy

I don't think these detract visually but the splitting means one wants to handle it with some care

Two drawers below with original wooden handles, and scalloped edges along the bottom. Feels Shaker meets tramp art to me,
