The box itself was carved out from  one piece of wood

6" x 4" and in very good condition

and I think it is the degree to which they take themselves seriously as portraits that I find so appealing

Better in person, where one can appreciate the detail, this is all hand done, ink and watercolor on heavyweight paper, late 19th c. I believe. Due to the scale, one actually needs a bit of distance from it to read the message, but much of the beauty and delight is in the details, which somehow seems appropriate in speaking to the nature of a mother!
