I'd love to know what this is

which is wonderfully strange

and wooden dowels for legs--was made in 1935 by Mid-Land Novelty Co

but really I'd treat this box more as a decorative than a functional object anyway--set it somewhere to admire it and leave it alone

and doesn't seem especially fragile

Super French, and really lovely, this is one I think I'd put in a frame and hang where I'd see it all the time in part as a reminder to live in the present. 3 1 2" x 5 1 2". Very good condition. Signed by the artist
