The bowl is not especially deep, so better I think for serving stew than soup, and then handily hanging up. It's certainly fairly old and has seen a lot of use; the wood of the bowl's interior is a bit rough, but the back and handle is mostly worn very smooth from many years of use, with just a little cracking to the surface of
